Built by the Portuguese in 1557, the Dutch Palace or Mattancherry Palace is one of the oldest and finest buildings built by the Portuguese in India. The palace was presented to Raja Veera Kerala Varma of Kochi, the ruler of Kochin in the 16th century. In the 17th century an extensive renovation work was made to the original constructions and from then onwards it came to be known as Dutch Palace. The Dutch Palace is a magnificent two-tiered quadrangular building with long and spacious halls and a central courtyard. Dutch Palace was built in typical Kerala mansion style. There is The Bhagavathi temple in the courtyard and two more temples of Lord Siva and Lord Krishna on either side of the palace. Experience the exquisite mythological murals or wall paintings in Dutch Palace depicting the themes of epics and puranas like Ramayana and Mahabharata. The palace also carries an amazing collection of weapons, furnitures and antiques. The upper storey of the palace has bed chamber known as Ramayana room which bears numerous paintings depicting the whole story of Ramayana. Besides this there are assembly hall,dinning hall,staircase and coronation hall in the Dutch Palace. In between the first floor and the ground floor there is “harem” of the rulers. The coronation hall is decorated with some exquisite painting work.
