Guruvayoor, also pronounced as Guruvayur is a small yet noted town of the Trissur district of Kerala. It lays around 25 kms away from the Thrissur city and is a spectacular tourist location. The sprawling temples, lush green surroundings and friendly inhabitants adorn this town of Kerala.
The temples of Guruvayoor are known all around the country for the magnificent temples positioned in every nook and corner of the town. These temples date back to the ancient ages and are of great attraction. Among all, the indigenous Guruvayur temple is the most prominent one. This temple is known as a noted pilgrimage, cultural center and also for influencing art and literature in Guruvayoor. The deity of the Guruvayur temple is built by using a rare stone known as the ‘Patala Anjana’. The temple also showcases the traditional architectural brilliance of Kerala and was built by Vishwakarma, the famous architect. All the four entrances of the temple lead one directly to the ‘Gopuram’, the place where the deity is positioned. The temple owns some 36 elephants for performing some of the religious tasks of the temple. Pilgrims and tourists from all across the country visit this temple for the fulfillment of their prayers. Even brides and grooms visit the Guruvayur temple for their wedding ceremonies.
The Elephant Santuary (Punnathur kotta), lying next to the temple, is renowned for training elephants for different purposes of the temple. Devotees of this temple offer elephants to this sanctuary hereby increasing their number to more than 60. A branch of the ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) has been built near to the temple for better convenience of the pilgrims and tourists.
Apart from the well constructed road and rail service, Guruvayoor is also close to the Kochi Airport. This tourist location is a great attraction among domestic tourists, inhabitants of Kerala (as a day trip or weekend getaway) and international visitors as well. The pleasant climate and serene atmosphere of Guruvayoor gives a soothing feeling to the visitors.
