Commonly denoted as the Kaloor International Stadium, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is a major sporting venue of international standards at Cochin. Built in 1996, this stadium is the home ground of the F C Cochin Football Club. The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi is also used by the Viva Kerala football team. These two groups use this stadium for for their practice as well as important matches. Though it was constructed for being a football stadium; however, today its regarded as one of the largest multi-usage stadiums of the country.
The architectural brilliance is unique in itself and incomparable with other stadiums in India. This gigantic stadium can accommodate almost 60,000 spectators and is well equipped with flood lights for catering the night matches. Formerly it used to host ample numbers of international football and cricket matches. Nehru Cup football tournament was the foremost tournament that was hosted in the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi. The stadium at first was overcrowded during the India v/s Iraq match; wherein almost 1 lakh people were seated. However, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi gained the maximum revenue when the ODI tournament between Pakistan and India was hosted here. People from all across the world flocked to this stadium as spectators, by readily paying extra amount of money for the tickets. Match between Australia and India was the first ODI match; whereas the last was between India and England on 6th April, 2006.
The stadium has an extended ground as well, which hosts cinema events, exhibitions and political meetings and rallies. In the year 2006 the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi experienced many changes, providing for the expansion and beautification of the stadium. Apart from the over all renovation, the construction of a new PVDF coated fabric roof is in the pipeline. Among the other developments, additional roads are being built for providing better connectivity to the stadium from other parts of the city.
For all the soccer buffs, a visit to Cochin is incomplete without seeing a match at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium or at least having a good look at it.
