Mattancherry Palace in Cochin is one of the oldest Portuguese buildings in India. The structure of Mattancherry Palace is very impressive. It is one of the oldest Dutch palaces in Cochin. Mattancherry Palace was built by Portuguese in the middle of 16th century. Eventually it was presented to Vir Kerala Verma, who was the ruler of Cochin at that time. The structure of Mattancherry Palace is two tired and is quadrangular in shape. The palace has got spacious beautiful halls. It is built in typical Kerala style. The open courtyard of the palace houses the deity 'Pazhayannur Bhagwati' of Royal family. The floor of Mattancherry Palace is built with the mixture of burnt charcoal, coconut shells, plant juices and egg whites. The floor is so appealing it appears as if the floor is made out of black marbles. On the upper floor there is a dining hall. Ramayana room assembly hall and stair case. The upper floor is built out of teak wood beams and planks and rafters. Overall the structure is very beautiful and reflects the traditional style of Kerala houses. Attractive furniture and spectacular interiors makes the Mattancherry Palace unique. One can visit the palace from 10 am to 5 pm except on Fridays and National holidays.
