Munnar is a small town situated in state of Kerala in south India. So popular is it among the tourists that it is often used to refer to the entire district of Idukki of which it forms only a small part. The Devikulam block comprising of the Munnar panchayat is the largest district having a total area of 557 square kilometers. The word Munnar is derived from the Malyalam words uunu and aaru which essentially means three and river respectively. This was mainly because the town of Munnar was located at the confluence of Muthirappuza,Chanduvarai and Kundali rivers. Situated in the Western Ghats, Munnar comprises of area which is enveloped by dense jungles. Not very far from the town is the Mattupetty Dam. The weather in Munnar generally remains wet and cold for most part of the year. The traditions and culture of the indigenous people is quite similar to that of the people of Kerala and the population of Munnar also contains a significant number of Tamil population.
The Munnar territory is almost entirely capitalized by the Tata Group of Companies for the purpose of tea plantation. The high range area also known as the Kennan Devan Hills is owned by the Tatas for the processing of their branded Tata Tea. Munnar's main tourist attractions include
- Mattupetty- It is situated at a height of 1700m above sea level and the Mattupetty Lake and Dam forms a perfect picnic spot for tourists and offers a fantastic view of both the tea plantation and the lake. An exquisite boating facility is provided in the lake so that the visitors can devour the beauty of Munnar and its surroundings. Also well known for its specialization in Dairy farms, Mattupetty is surrounded by the Shola forest which can prove to be an ideal place for trekking. This forest also inhabits a large variety of birds and streamlets that aggravate the beauty of the place.
- Rajamala- This is the natural habitat of Nilgiri Tahr and half of the world's population of this rare specie of goat is found here, although it now nearing extinction.
- Echo Point- This extraordinary place reverberates natural echo and displays an enchanting and panoramic view of the hills.
- Eravikulam National Park-It is a sanctuary for the endangered species of Nilgiri Tahr. The Eravikulam National Park is very popular for its outstanding beauty of rolling grasslands and sholas that spreads over 97 square kilometers in the Rajamalai hills.
- Anamudi - Anamudi is the highest peak south of the Himalayas. The magnificent slopes of the hills features extraordinary flora and fauna. Moreover the mountains also houses a unique inhabitant, the Atlas Moth which is the largest of its kind in the world. Some other rare species of fauna found here are the Nilgiri Langoor, the lion-tailed Macaque, Leopards, Tigers and many other resplendent animals.
