Trichur

The headquarters of the Thrissur District is referred as Trichur or Thrissur. This city situated in the heart of Kerala is the cultural hub of the state and bagged the mark of ‘Cultural Capital of Kerala’. The Thrissur Pooram is considered as the hallmark of this place. Trichur is noted worldwide for housing some of the most spectacular temples and churches of the country, namely Paramekkavu temple, Vadakkumnatha temple, Thiruvambady temple, Our Lady of Dolour’s ‘New Church’ Basilica and Our Lady of Lourdes Metropolitan Cathedral.

The rich cultural background of Trichur and pleasant climatic conditions has always been the chief reasons for attracting tourists in large numbers. The architectural work on the religious monuments showcases the traditional style of Kerala perfectly. Trichur also houses South Asia’s tallest and biggest church, the Church of Our Lady of Dolours. The Thrissur Pooram festival exhibits the opulent ceremonial umbrellas and the huge elephants. The drum concerts and outstanding firework displays give the Thrissur festival a magnificent look and also attract a large amount of crowd every year. On the fourth day of the Onam celebration, the famous ‘Puli Kali’ is hosted in Trichur. This is basically a colorful and amazing procession, wherein almost every club of Trichur and residents dress in the form of tiger and add up to the festival.

This cultural capital of Kerala accommodates three noted academies as well, namely Kerala Latitha Kala Academy, Sangeetha Nataka Academy and Kerala Sahithya Academy. Apart from all this, Trichur is also noted for its film festivals, indi-pop bands, renowned theatres and cultural centers.

The convenient location and well developed communication and transport facility at Trichur are the other factors for attracting domestic as well as international tourists. Apart from the rail and road, Trichur is also few kilometers away from the state’s important airports. Visit this place to take pleasure in visiting the beautiful locations such as Thrissur Zoo, Vilangan Kunnu, Archeological and Art Museum, Appan Thampuran Smarakam and so forth.
